Easy Do It Youself SEO - Get more FREE traffic to your website

As a web designer for small businesses I find that one of the major issues that most small business owners face is how I get more traffic to my website.  The field of Search Engine Optimisation or SEO tends to be one that is cloaked in mystery, but is it really so difficult? There are some very simple SEO strategies that you can use with your small business website to improve your page ranking in the search engines without investing a lot of time and money. This will help you to get more free traffic to your website.

There are a couple of major factors which affect how your site ranks with the Search Engines. Without wanting to oversimplify things, the two main things that affect your ranking are the content on your site, and the number of other sites that link to your site. There are obviously some other factors, but as a website designer I find that these are the two factors that you have the most control over. In the eyes of Google and the other search engines, what they want to do is deliver relevant content to their customers, people that are searching the web for information. Thus it is vital that your site is relevant and delivers accurate information to your visitors. The other important factor in terms of search engine ranking that you have some direct control over is the number of other sites that contain a link directly to your site. A link to your site from another site is a vote for your site in the eyes of the search engine. As such, the more votes that your site has, the more important it becomes.

Creating content for your site that is relevant to your users is vital to the success of your site. What do your customers search for when they search the web for your products? What words and phrases do they use? If you are in a competitive market you will probably find that the most searched for terms are very competitive. But in most markets you will also find a number of other words and phrases that have good traffic but are far less competitive. Creating content around these words and phrases is a great way to boost your rankings for these terms, and hence drive more traffic to your site. You can also use this content to post to article directories on the web and this is a great way to create links bank to your site from your articles on these directories.

Link building is the other way that you can boost your search engine rankings, even if you don’t have much content on your site. A site that is built purely in Flash, and as such invisible to the search engines can still rank well by having a lot of links. There are a number of ways that you can build links to your sites for free. These include business guides and directories, article marketing, industry forums, social media, and your suppliers and customers. You can do this without investing a lot of time and for very little money. You might look to create 5 to 10 new links each day by investing 20 to 30 minutes. Gradually over time you will build up the number of links your site will have. If you get 10 links per day, in the next month you will have 300 new links. In 6 months from now that will make a significant difference to your rankings in the search engines.

So, you can do SEO on a limited budget of time and money using a couple of simple steps. New content on a regular basis for your site based around specific keywords will build your search engine rankings. And new links to your site will also help to build your ranking in the search engines. SEO is a very mysterious subject for a lot of small business owners when it comes to their website and you can invest a lot of money in SEO if you want to. But there are some simple things that you can do to help yourself before you spend a lot of money.
